Return of trees to tropical cultivated areas

Key words
  • Assisted natural regeneration (ANR) has been used in the Sahel for over twenty years. This method has made it possible to reconstruct complex agroforestry systems over hundreds of thousands of hectares (Niger, northern Cameroon, etc.), with the contribution of CIRAD. It could be applied in the humid tropical zone, where the forest is cleared on a large scale by slash and burn, giving way after cultivation to fallow land with Chromolaena odorata, which is very poor in biodiversity.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on the Batéké plateau, the European Makala project tested RNA methods in the last shreds of gallery forests, with the populations.
